NEST Environmental Education

Environmental Education Rooted in the West Coast.

Environmental Education Rooted in the West Coast.

Where Young Minds Take Flight.

NEST exists to inspire a new generation of environmentally aware and engaged young people through meaningful, place-based learning experiences.

We believe that lasting environmental responsibility begins with understanding. When learners have the opportunity to explore the natural environments around them, they develop a deeper appreciation for the ecosystems that support their communities and daily lives.

Working primarily in under-resourced coastal communities, NEST creates opportunities for young people to engage with environmental issues in ways that are relevant, accessible, and inspiring. Through exploration, discovery, and participation, learners gain knowledge, confidence, and a stronger sense of connection to the world around them.

NEST is equally committed to investing in people. By identifying, training, and supporting local educators and facilitators, we create meaningful employment opportunities while building environmental education capacity within the communities we serve. This approach ensures that knowledge, skills, and leadership remain rooted locally, creating benefits that extend far beyond individual programmes.

Action Through Education.

South Africa’s West Coast is home to remarkable coastal ecosystems that support biodiversity, local livelihoods, and cultural heritage. Yet these environments face growing pressures from pollution, habitat degradation, climate change, and increasing development.

Despite the importance of these issues, many learners have limited opportunities to engage directly with environmental topics beyond the classroom. At the same time, many communities face challenges around skills development, employment opportunities, and access to specialised environmental education resources.

NEST was established to help address both challenges.

By bringing learners into direct contact with the environments around them, we transform environmental concepts into tangible experiences. At the same time, we invest in local educators and facilitators, creating pathways for skills development, leadership, and employment that strengthen communities from within.

Through locally relevant learning and community-led delivery, young people gain a clearer understanding of environmental challenges while communities build the capacity to respond to them.

Every lesson encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and a sense of personal responsibility while creating opportunities for local educators to facilitate learning in ways that are culturally relevant and community-driven.

Learning Through Connection.

Our curriculum is designed around active participation and experiential learning.

Rather than relying solely on traditional teaching methods, we encourage learners to investigate, explore, observe, and engage. Through outdoor activities, creative projects, group discussions, and environmental exploration, learners develop a practical understanding of the natural systems that shape their communities.

Curriculum topics include waste and recycling, climate awareness, the role of trees in the environment, water conservation, wetland bird life, and local heritage. Alongside environmental learning, learners also participate in our Kinetics programme, which focuses on developing physical awareness of the body and strengthening the connection between personal wellbeing and the natural world.

By connecting learning to real places and real experiences, we help learners build knowledge that is both meaningful and memorable.

Nest With Us.
